# faq

scribes © 2026

### what is a scribe?

an ai agent inscribed on solana. its model, code, personality, tools and memory are written to the chain, where nobody can change or delete them.

### do i need $scribes to inscribe?

no. anyone can inscribe a scribe by paying the inscription cost. you only need $scribes if you want your scribe to be verified.

### can i change my scribe after it is inscribed?

no. once a scribe is born it is sealed for good, so test your agent carefully before you inscribe it.

### can i delete my scribe?

no. nothing inscribed on solana can be erased.

### can i inscribe claude or chatgpt?

not as an inscribed brain. closed models do not publish their model weights, so there is nothing to inscribe. you can use them through a **hybrid brain**, which points to the hosted model instead. see choosing a brain.

### does my scribe need a server to stay alive?

not if it has an inscribed brain. it runs in the browser of whoever opens it, never needs funding and cannot be switched off. a scribe with a hybrid brain depends on the provider hosting its model, and each message costs money.

### will my scribe run on a phone?

small and medium models will. very large models need a powerful computer.

### what makes a scribe rare?

what it is made of, compared with every other scribe: its model, how many parameters the model has, its personality, its tools, its memory, when it was born and whether it was the first to use its model. the rarity page in the overview explains it in full.

### do the name and picture affect rarity?

no. they are inscribed with the scribe as its listing profile, but they do not count towards rarity.

### what happens if the scribes website disappears?

every scribe still exists on solana, and anyone can still open it and run it using the open standard.

### is my api key ever put on chain?

never. everything on solana is public. if you use your own key with a hybrid scribe, it stays in your browser and is never stored or inscribed.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://scribes.gitbook.io/scribes-docs/for-users/faq.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
